Chrysler Cars during the late 1950s and early 1960s and the Unconventionally Shaped Steeting Wheel

When we think  of steering wheels, why do we normally visualize them always as round? Ed sent an email out this morning with an early 1960s Chrysler product that was oblong or maybe even elliptical. I would like to learn much more about the plastics used, the designers who used them, and the public reception to these new shapes. A remarkable story for sure.

The design was very much the rage at Chrysler in their high end vehicles for a short time. They were beautiful, works of art, with unusual plastic materials and horn button controls.

Note that contemporary interior designers are exploring shapes and materials that deviate from our traditional notions of the steering wheel. Where do you put the exploding airbag, however?
