This blog will expand on themes and topics first mentioned in my book, "The Automobile and American Life." I hope to comment on recent developments in the automobile industry, reviews of my readings on the history of the automobile, drafts of my new work, contributions from friends, descriptions of the museums and car shows I attend and anything else relevant. Cruise-In at Beavercreek, Ohio, June 6, 2014
Hi folks -- I got a late start, but eventually ended up at the Beavercreek, OH, Cruise-In last night. This week was quite different, as now the lot once used, that of the defunct Eastgate Ford, is off limits as construction has started there. So the event moved uphill to the Lofino's and movie theater lot. Not real good. The asphalt is crumbling, everything was squeezed in, and there were so many cars coming and going that the air quality was horrible. Remember, most of these cars are pre-smogged, so to speak. It was an excellent demonstration of what emissions controls have done to make the air far better than what it was in 1965.
The upshot of all of this is I doubt I will be going much after last night's experience. That is too bad, because the area needs a weekly cruise-in! Obviously a new site needs to be found for this great event.
