SOME IMAGES OF THE RURAL AMERICAN ROAD

THE FOLLOWING ARE IMAGES TAKEN FROM THE CAROL M. HIGHSMITH COLLECTION AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. I AM USING THEM TO LEARN MORE ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHING THE ROAD. WHAT ROLE DOES LIGHT PLAY? THE ALIGNMENT OF THE ROAD ITSELF? BALANCE RIGHT AND LEFT, UP AND DOWN. THE SKY? WHAT MOOD IS BEING CONVEYED?

Desolate country road near Brushy Prairie in LaGrange County, Indiana (HSM/LC)

Dirt road beside a cornfield near Clarkesville in Habersham County, Georgia(HSM/LC)

Gravel road near Shelburne, Vermont (HSM/LC)

Country road in fall near Etna, Maine(HSM/LC)

Dirt road to nowhere in rural Moffat County, Colorado; well, Wyoming, if you take the road far enough in either direction. It loops up over the Wyoming border going either east or west
