A Mercedes 380 SL in the Film “Arthur Newman,” (2012).

This is a film depicting how a man drives a Mercedes-Benz 380 SL while escaping his failed life and in so doing starts a new one. In the process he meets a woman who is doing the same thing. And they begin anew togehter, in a R 107 that defines hope in the good life. The film has a number of high and joyous moments, and the car is the perfect conveyance as it carries two down and out people with beautiful hearts -- just like the skin of the car. And just like the car, the film ends with the recognition that their journey is a delusion, with the only recourse for these characters to return to their real lives that are sadly filled with harsh challenges.

The Mercedes-Benz R 107 is such a beautiful and uplifting car that it can take someone out of the typical day to day darkness of routine life.  I see this all the time with women I encounter who for the most part see the car and are effusive with their emotions as reflected in smiles and kind words to me. We want more out of life, but are afraid to break the chains imposed by society that tie us to responsible, but dour,  relationships.
