I'm jealous! Ed Garten and his wife are invited to a shindig at the Rail Haven Best Western in Springfield, Mo on August 10 to celebrate among other things the use of a photo of his grandfather's 1950s Drive-In located in Hinton West Virginia as a mural in a number of Best Western motels. I have added two photos for your viewing pleasure: a photo of the motel he is going to as it appeared in the 1950s -- note the Chevy and Buick; also one of the oldest surviving operating Drive-Ins, this one in nearby Carthage, Mo in Route 66.
Now for sure I have an itch for a road trip of my own.
This blog will expand on themes and topics first mentioned in my book, "The Automobile and American Life." I hope to comment on recent developments in the automobile industry, reviews of my readings on the history of the automobile, drafts of my new work, contributions from friends, descriptions of the museums and car shows I attend and anything else relevant. John, the Rail Haven sign still looks the same as it does in the photo. Close by on Glenstone there is a Steak & Shake that has monthly cruise ins but not sure which days this year. A few of us have talked about taking our cars to the 66 Drive in sometime in the early fall. I think it will be a great evening if we do. Terry
